L.E.A.P. Groups & Activities
Horsing Around:
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy uses actual horses to teach such things as problem solving, team building, self-esteem, building healthy relationships, improving communication skills and maintaining healthy boundaries. All instruction is given on the ground. Horse knowledge is not necessary, no riding involved. Parental release forms must be signed before clients can participate.
Alternatives to Risky Behaviors:
Alternatives to Risky Behavior is designed to help teens explore healthy options for the prevention of adolescent high-risk behaviors. It will provide a variety of options to promote healthy behavior, encouraging clients to become aware of current actions that may prove risky and identify ways to substitute healthier behaviors.
Life Skills:
This group is meant to assist young people in gaining some of the tools and skills necessary to become successful in life. The concepts include: defining goals for oneself, recognizing effective vs. ineffective communication tactics, identifying and utilizing personal resources, identifying proper hygiene tools, and skills necessary to complete Activities of Daily Living Skills.
Leadership:
The leadership group offers the opportunity for clients to discover themselves through a variety of hands on experiences. Initiative activities will encourage the chance to build communication skills, relationship building, improve self-esteem and much more. The leadership group will provide clients the opportunity to explore leadership positions at home, school, as well as possible future employment.
Aquatic Therapy:
Aquatic Therapy will provide clients opportunity to exercise in a therapeutic environment that promotes improved range of motion and freedom for individuals with physical disabilities. The warm water will provide support to aid with overall movement, stretching, and walking and decrease the effect of gravity on joints, lessening the stress of weight bearing.
Creative Expression:
Structured and creative activities provided each week will provide clients with the opportunity to express themselves in positive and appropriate manners through
Arts and Crafts, Music, and Dance. This is also a great opportunity to work on social skills such as sharing materials, appropriate conversation, as well as taking responsibility for own space/cleaning up after oneself and improving/maintaining hand-eye coordination.
Leisure Lifestyles:
Clients will be encouraged to explore a variety of new leisure pursuits, to stretch out their ‘free time vocabulary.’ They will have the opportunity to try new things as well as learn how to access healthy leisure in the community, create and plan their own outings.
Garden Therapy:
Garden Therapy will start up in the spring and continue through early fall. We’ll play in the dirt and learn responsibility by taking care of each plant and growing it from seedling to fruit/plant. By taking care of our plants we will identify factors that helps it grow such as sunlight, water, nutrients, and TLC just as we need to thrive in our families, communities and in life.
Gym Time:
Physical exercise and movement activities will provide clients opportunity to interact with peers in a safe environment, working on skills such as following directions, personal boundaries, team sports, cooperation, and healthy lifestyles as well as positive leisure outlets.
Community Outings:
Weekly trips out in the community will provide clients with an opportunity to create great memories, experience positive leisure, and work on skills to get around safely in the community. Clients will learn how to identify leisure interests, plan healthy activities, and demonstrate safety with regards to strangers, traffic, and personal care.
