Thyroid Health Explained Simply

Paola

When I was experiencing chronic fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, digestive issues, and sleep problems, no one thought to properly check my thyroid. And when I say properly, I mean beyond basic blood tests. My thyroid results were considered “normal,” so for years I remained undiagnosed. Looking back, I wish I had understood more about thyroid health and how deeply it affects the whole body. I would probably have avoided many of the struggles my symptoms caused. This personal experience is why I deeply understand the burden thyroid disorders place on quality of life, and why I made it my mission to support women with thyroid conditions, helping them thrive despite their diagnosis and, when possible, move toward reversal.

To understand why thyroid issues are so often missed or misunderstood, we first need to understand what the thyroid is and how it works.

What Is the Thyroid and Why It Affects Your Whole Body

The thyroid is a small gland located at the front of the neck, but it plays a major role in the body. It regulates metabolism, energy production, growth, and tissue development through the hormones T3 and T4. The thyroid influences how much energy you have, how easily you gain or lose weight, how warm or cold you feel, your mood, digestion, and how clear your thinking is.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine Explains Thyroid Health

In Western medicine, thyroid health is mainly evaluated through hormone levels such as TSH, T3, and T4. Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, takes a broader view. Instead of focusing only on the gland itself, TCM looks at how energy flows through the body and how different systems interact with each other. This perspective helps explain why symptoms can exist even when blood tests appear normal.

In TCM, thyroid function is closely connected to Yuan Qi, which means original or deep life energy. Yuan Qi comes from the Kidneys and supports growth, development, and the body’s ability to transform food and air into usable energy. When this deep energy is weakened, the body may struggle to regulate metabolism, hormones, and overall vitality.

From this perspective, the thyroid is part of a wider functional system linked especially to the Kidneys. Other organs such as the Spleen, Liver, Heart, and Stomach are also involved because the meridians, or energy pathways associated with them, travel through the neck and throat area. This helps explain why thyroid imbalances can affect digestion, emotions, sleep, circulation, and mental clarity.

Common Thyroid Conditions

The most common thyroid conditions are goiter, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism.

A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland and can sometimes make swallowing or breathing uncomfortable. In TCM, goiter is often linked to stagnant energy, emotional tension, fluid buildup, or poor circulation, rather than to the thyroid alone.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the body is working too fast. People may feel nervous, anxious, restless, hot, have trouble sleeping, lose weight easily, or feel their heart beating fast. In TCM, this pattern is often associated with excess heat or overactive energy, frequently linked to stress, strong emotions, and long periods of overwork.

Hypothyroidism is the opposite pattern. Everything slows down. People often feel chronically tired, cold, heavy, mentally foggy, gain weight easily, and retain fluids. In TCM, this is usually seen as a lack of warming and nourishing energy, especially connected to the Kidneys and the Spleen.

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, leading to inflammation and impaired thyroid function. It can cause symptoms such as fatigue, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, low mood, and depression. Over time, if left unaddressed, it may contribute to heart and other health complications.

Sometimes thyroid imbalances first appear only in blood tests, without clear symptoms. In other cases, especially with Hashimoto’s disease, symptoms are present even when TSH, T3, and T4 levels look normal. This is one of the main reasons Hashimoto’s often remains undiagnosed for years, as it did in my own experience.

How Qi Gong Can Support Thyroid Health Naturally

Gentle practices like Qi Gong can play a powerful supportive role in managing thyroid symptoms. Qi Gong is a slow and mindful practice that combines gentle movement, breathing, and awareness. It helps energy flow smoothly through the meridians, calms the nervous system, and reduces the effects of chronic stress, which is a major factor in many thyroid conditions, together with inflammation.

For people with thyroid imbalances, Qi Gong can help calm anxiety, improve sleep, support digestion, reduce inflammation, and gently increase energy without pushing the body into exhaustion.

Qi Gong can help people who feel cold and depleted reconnect with warmth and vitality, and help those who feel overheated and restless slow down and feel more grounded. Regular practice also improves body awareness, making it easier to notice early signs of imbalance and respond before symptoms worsen.

A Holistic Approach to Thyroid Health and Healing

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, thyroid health is never separated from emotions, lifestyle, and daily habits. Qi Gong fits naturally into this approach because it supports the whole person, not just the thyroid. It does not replace medical care, but it can be a gentle and effective complement, helping the body regain balance step by step, in a way that feels safe, sustainable, and respectful.

While TCM and Qi Gong are not presented as a cure, they offer a valuable path toward symptom relief, improved well-being, and a better quality of life. If you are curious to experience the effects yourself, you can start by trying one of my Qi Gong classes and gently reconnecting with your body’s natural capacity for balance.
